Hello everyone and thank you for your interest in my profile.
My name is Álvaro Écija Bernal, Managing Partner at Ecix Group, hybrid firm of Technology and Law, specializing in Information Security and Compliance.
But let´s start with the beginning. I hold an LLB from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid (UAM) and an IP and Internet Communications Diploma from the Skidmore College of New York.
In 1997 I was a Founding Partner at Écija Abogados, a firm that was ranked amongst the 15 biggest law firms in Spain.
In 2012, as a result of the areas of Compliance and Information Security splitting from Écija Abogados, I founded Ecix Group with my partner and friend Carlos Alberto Sáiz Peña (@Carlos_A_Saiz). I´m not particularly fond of using expressions such as “Leading Firm” to define ourselves, but the truth is that I believe that our listed clients, our projection, our use of technology and our experience allow me to say that we are indeed a leading firm in services and legal solutions for information security and compliance.
Besides, I feel especially proud of our offices in Singapore and we are about to open a new office in American time to offer global coverage to our clients.
In 2015, after many months of study in our laboratory of ideas “eLab” I have launched a new initiative that I hope and wish that, through the years, will become a full legal discipline: “Cyberlaw“.
In any case, if there is anything that defines us better than “Leading Firm” it’s our determined and constant bet for innovation. We have created an algorithm that predicts legal risk -Legal Risk = Probability x Sanctions – and we have a +15 IT staff that have made it possible to develop our own tools, unique in the national market. I´m not going to explain to you here all the tools that we’ve developed and their functionalities as you can read more about them in our corporate website: www.ecixgroup.com.
I don´t intend to dwell more on this topic, as in this section I am supposed to talk about myself, so let’s continue.
I like to think of myself as an entrepreneur. One of my adventures was the company “Proyectalia Iniciativas de Internet, S.A.”, which had the website www.contratosonline.com as its flagship. Nowadays it is quite common, but back then, nobody had contracts available for download on the Internet.
In addition, I currently am a partner in “Smart Projects And Ventures, S.L”, a company for investment and venture capital in technological enterprises. I am also partner of the company “Beauty Concept”.
Regarding my past activities, I was a EU Adviser for the main Spanish telecoms within the Euro6ix project, advising on legal aspects related to display and use of protocol IPv6.
Teaching is also one of my passions and that’s why I teach about Compliance at the prestigious IE Law School (Instituto de Empresa), as well as a LLM on Telecommunications Law and New Technologies at the Carlos III University of Madrid.
In another area of things, my acquired knowledge on digital law led me to be an arbitrator, specializing in the resolution of .es domains conflicts.
My Director of Communication has insisted on me saying that in 2007 I was selected by Iberian Lawyer as one of the best lawyers under 40 years-old, in their “Top 40 under 40” awards, so… that’s done.
Just one more thing to finish, as I don´t want to bore you more than what I might already have done: I have co-written the following books: (i) “COMPLIANCE: how to manage regulatory risks in the company”; (ii) “Factbook: Personal Data” and (iii) “Compliance and Security” (all of them published by Thomson-Aranzadi) and I am the proud solo author of the following publications: (iv) “Internet: Legal keys for companies” (Cívitas) and (v) “Internet contracts, Models and Practical Comments” (Aranzadi).
Thank you for reading until the end!
